Letting in the Light–and Air

These acrylic-block casement windows offer the homeowner both fresh air and privacy.

By Kathy Ziprik

Homeowners wanting the best of all window worlds–privacy, natural sunlight and air flow–have a new option available: operable acrylic-block windows. Available for new construction and retrofit applications, operable acrylic-block windows are available in casement, awning and basement hopper styles.

The windows can be made to order with custom feature options, such as diamond block design styles, different muntin finishes and a variety of patterns and colors. These windows also allow egress access when installed in bathrooms and other rooms in the home.

"Connecting with the outdoors is one of the primary reasons homeowners want lots of windows in their houses," according to Mike Shon, vice president and general manager of Hy-Lite Products, a manufacturer of operable acrylic-block windows. "People thrive on light and air." Yet, he points out, there are locations, such as over bathtubs and kitchen sinks, where privacy is also a primary factor in window selection. Shon says that these are ideal locations for operable acrylic-block windows.

"Just imagine gaining the decorative and privacy features of acrylic blocks, coupled with the ability to open the window to allow for air flow. There's no better combination available to a homeowner looking to maximize their home's design while connecting with nature."

Installation of acrylic-block windows is easier, too, since they weigh only 30% as much as same-size glass-block units. Hermetically sealed, airtight blocks mean fewer callbacks, too.
