When homeowners Tjasa and Scott bought their San Francisco row house, it had been converted into a duplex and was in pretty rough shape. The couple wanted a renovation that brought the house back to a single-family dwelling, but also one that reflected their artistic talents.
Architect Steven House came up with a design that was at once modern yet fit in with the traditional style of homes in the neighborhood. The first item on the agenda was coping with the considerable amount of settling the building had experienced through the years. It took quite a bit of work to bring the row house back to true and level. In all, the fabulous renovation took fifteen months of construction.
The new design added about 500 additional square feet to the original home--most of which came from the third floor addition, which contains a new master bedroom suite. All of the interior and exterior spaces were redesigned to give the homeowners the modern look that they wanted.
The exterior now features a fresh and more modern look, while the new interior space has been redesigned to fit a new dining room, kitchen and garage, which was actually built using the space from a lower level bedroom.

Interior Highlights
Figure A A staircase featuring tension wires along the railing and contrasting steps is one of the highlights of the new, much airier living room.
Figure B The kitchen is now open to the main living space. Modern cabinets hide many appliances.
Figure C A bedroom on the second floor was converted into an open-air family room overlooking the main living area. The owners were looking for a modern loft-style look with their extensive remodeling and are very pleased with the spacious two-story open area.
Figure D The third-floor master suite carries through with the airy, open design. Skylights accentuate the barrel roof, and the closets and bathroom are both open to the living space.
