Before
The kitchen in this late 1960s contemporary split-level is too long, narrow and dark. It was designed in a way that closed it off from the rest of the first floor , as well as to sunlight which floods the rest of the home. The floor plan is stifling for the cook and creates a traffic jam when more than two people are in the space. The dark cabinets and old appliances need upgrading, as the kitchen over the years has become worn out and has a dated look. The owners, both avid cooks, want a modern kitchen that can be more a part of the life of the rest of the house.
After
With the dividing wall gone, the new kitchen is wide open and exposed to the living and dining rooms. The two-tone cabinets and granite countertops are attractive and contemporary. The appliances have all been upgraded, and a bay window gives the breakfast area a new bright, airy spaciousness. The sunlight that reaches the dining and living rooms now fills the kitchen, too.
