Before remodeler David Tyson, CR, CLC, CKBR, takes on a project, he always makes certain to explain the advantages of universal design to his clients. Over the years, David has found that simple changes, such as installing removable showerheads on a slide bar or adding sit-at vanities, can make life easier for his customers. This attention to detail and concern for his clients' long-term happiness has made David an award-winning remodeler.
"We try to design bathrooms, kitchens and whole-house remodels to accommodate all persons, regardless of age, size or physical impairment," says David, owner and CEO of David Tyson & Associates Inc. (Charlotte, N.C.). "We want to make living comfortable for our clients. This means recommending and installing a wide variety of easy-living and low-maintenance products."
Bathrooms often are particularly challenging for people with any kind of mobility problem. David suggests curbless showers, higher placement of wall outlets, three-foot wide toilet areas with grab bars and anti-scald shower valves to make them as user-friendly as possible. He also likes using acrylic block windows, noting that they are low-maintenance and provide light without the homeowner having to deal with window shades for privacy.
While David offers both operable and fixed acrylic block windows, both available from Hy-Lite Products Inc., he finds that his customers prefer the fixed, no-hassles version most often. "These windows serve as decorations for the walls while adding more light in the room," says Tyson. "Even during the evening hours, light can play in from the outside of the house while still protecting the privacy of its occupants."
In the five years since David started using acrylic blocks in his projects, he has had enthusiastic reactions from his clients. In fact, David's new business is exclusively referrals. He must be doing something very right indeed.
