Tool kit for builders
Thanks to the Internet, builders can find tools to help them better understand home technology and educate their customers. "Our TechHome website can help the builder understand the whole home-technology picture," Henning says. The site not only contains system information, but also provides a link to locate home technology installers in a particular builder's marketing area.

Additionally, CEA has prepared a tool kit,Connecting Builders With Technology, that demystifies home technology. Among the features of the tool kit is a checklist that the builder can use when discussing home electronics with potential customers.

"Another good source for information is the technical systems integrator," Henning adds. "An integrator provides expertise in installation and integration of systems into new homes and in updating older homes. A builder doesn't necessarily have to be an expert himself on all aspects of home technology, any more than he has to be an expert in plumbing or electricity."

The home integrator acts as a subcontractor, much as a plumber or electrician. Establishing a relationship with a good integrator can quickly bring a builder's operation up to speed in the area of home electronics, she says. The tool kit includes a list of integrators.

Connecting Builders With Technology is available at no charge from CEA, Henning says. "Builders can call me direct at 703-907-7654 and I will be happy to send them a copy." Or fax a request to CEA at 703-907-7690.
