Triple master contractor Ed Del Grande

By Ed Del Grande

Q: Hi, Ed. I'm a tile contractor and recently replaced tiles in an older shower stall and also replaced the shower door. The shower stall has as older fiberglass base with some chips and surface cracks, plus it's dingy. Now that the tile and door look great, the old-looking base is sticking out like a sore thumb. Short of replacing the base, what can I do to improve the looks of the fiberglass base for my customer? "Big Al the tile man" (South Carolina)

A: Hi, Big Al. Believe it or not, the solution for your problems should be right around the corner for you! Keep in mind that a fiberglass shower base is almost like an "inside out" boat hull. So, if you needed to restore a boat bottom, where would you go the get the proper materials to fix the boat? A marine supply store! Since you're located close to the ocean, there should be plenty of boat stores in your area that will sell fiberglass-restoring agents that should work for the fiberglass base. Also there are many marine epoxy products to fix anything from chips to holes on any size boat. In most cases you can repair fiberglass shower bases with these same products. So, Big Al, stop by your local boat yard, and you'll sail out with a big smile on your face!
