HOST: I think everybody's familiar with Kwikset, great door hardware company. But there's something that came out, I'm assuming, like a year ago that -- I love this product. And can you tell us a little bit more about it?
VENDOR: Yeah, Kwikset is real excited about SmartScan here. Really IBS this year is really about unveiling our SmartSeries platform products, which includes SmartScan but also includes SmartKey, which is a rekeying technology. It will allow you to rekey your lock while it's on the door in less than thirty seconds. It also includes SmartCode, which is a new push button deadbolt.
HOST: And that's great for people like that tend to forget and lose things like keys.
VENDOR: Absolutely, absolutely. Kwikset's really combined the convenience, security, and style along with some technology into our new SmartCode package.
HOST: Well great. And I love all the different finishes that you guys came out with. Can you give us a little demonstration on this just because it is really a wonderful new product?
VENDOR: Yeah, yeah. So quickly, SmartScan reads the fingerprint -- reads the subdermal part of your fingerprint in order to unlock the door.
HOST: (OVER) So this is keyed to you right now?
VENDOR: (OVER) This is keyed to me.
HOST: (OVER) So if I come up and -- (TOUCHES DEADBOLT)
VENDOR: You're not going to -- (HOST: No business) Nope, no business. It's not going to work. Now I will tell you that anybody can actually lock this. I'm going to lock this first for you. (HOST: Okay) And to lock it, it takes three taps of the sensor, which is hidden back underneath the lip there. (DEMO) So I just locked it. So if you have a guest in your house -- They're not enrolled in the system. They're the last ones to leave. They can still lock the deadbolt behind them.
HOST: Okay. So anybody can lock it.
VENDOR: That's right. That's right. But you do have to be enrolled into the system in order to unlock it. So with one swipe of my finger (DEMO) it checks the database. I'm in there. It unlocks the deadbolt for me. It's as easy as that.
HOST: Great. And does Kwikset have any other new products they're coming out with at the International Builders' Show this year?
VENDOR: Yeah, and really one of our new products that we're getting out to the masses in April is SmartKey. And you know the Smart Series has a backup cylinder in here, so in case you're not comfortable with the technology you can always use the key.
HOST: (OVER) Yeah, you can always use your key if you don't have your finger with you. (LAUGHS)
VENDOR: Exactly. So like I said, SmartKey really is a rekeying system that will allow you to rekey your lock while it's on the door in under thirty seconds. And not only that but it's -- It's got superior security as well. It is a system that is virtually pick-proof. It also protects against lock bumping, which is a threat to the industry, a threat to pin and tumbler locks in general. So again, we're really excited about the security, about the convenience that SmartKey as well as SmartScan brings to the consumer.
HOST: As a builder, I think little gadgets tend to sell houses. I don't mean to call your product a "gadget", but, you know, someone comes up and sees something new like this and I show a potential homebuyer this, I think I can sell them this. And it's something I can get customers, maybe, into my house so that we can have exciting new products like this one.
VENDOR: Well absolutely. For the builder it's a huge upgrade to sell, you're right. But it also brings some efficiency and some added security to the builder as well. Once appliances are in the house they can fee free to go and change locks anytime. They're not going to have to worry, you know, which contractor has a key to the house and who they want to let in and who they don't, so it's a real good security feature for the builder as well.
HOST: Yeah I was thinking that, because we always had some issues with the -- if the door's on, of course, and we wanted to start locking the house to keep some people out but be able to let subs in. With this technology I'm not really handing out keys and I can get people scanned in and scanned out, so I can change who I can let in and -- and not let in.
VENDOR: Sure, sure. And again, both with SmartScan -- the fingerprint technology -- and SmartKey, it gives you options.
HOST: Great. I love it.
