HOST: Tell us a little bit about Typar and their products.
REP: Well, Typar is best known for its housewrap, which is a whole category of trying to keep water and air from penetrating the wall cavity. So, it's an important aspect of buildings and it's important for energy-efficiency. So, what we do is you wrap the outside of the house before you put the siding up, and what it does is keep water and air from penetrating the wall cavity and helps increase energy-efficiency of the house and reduces the intrusion of bulk water.
HOST: Right. Well, by anybody's codes anymore, you have to have a housewrap. What sets your product apart from the rest?
REP: Well, there's a couple very important aspects. First off, we have one of the highest trapezoidal tearstrikes of any housewrap. So, once you put it up, it stays up. We have a very high UV rating which allows you to put it up, and you can have it up for quite awhile--six months before you have to get the siding on. We have an optimal permeous rating. So that means that the wall cavity can breathe--moisture vapor can get out, but bulk water can't get in.
And also probably most important is surfactive resistance. So a lot of houses are made with stuccos (HOST: Right.) or woods, cedar siding. We resist the soaps and emulsifiers and things like that that can reduce the bulk-water holdout.
HOST: I'm looking -- Here we have a little bit of the top part Stormwrap here. And what I'm noticing, just feeling this, it's much more -- It's a thicker, more-durable filling than my average housewrap. I'm paying just a little more for it, but my understanding, what you're telling me -- This stays on the house. It's worth a little extra money to get that extra protection upfront.
REP: Absolutely. This product is a revolution in housewraps. It's a patent-pending product, and what it does is actually put -- impact-resistance is integrated with our performance-leading housewrap. And so what you can see is we put an impact-resistant scrim (HOST: Right.) on the backside. So what it does, is it allows you to put that around the house and protects you in extreme weather conditions. So, hurricanes, tornadoes, where you have flying debris -- (HOST: That stuff is tough.)
It is. It is tough. And you put it up just like housewrap, and so right here in the Florida area, instead of putting up cinderblock or cast-in-place concrete (HOST: Right), you can put this up with a studwall. It allows you to put insulation in the wall cavity, now dramatically improving your energy-efficiency of your building. (HOST: Right.) You can put the building up faster. (HOST: Right.) And it's actually when you look at the total cost of that wall structure, it's less than cinderblock or cast-in-place concrete.
HOST: I want to talk about energy-efficiency, the big buzz--homebuilding, green. How do you help me be -- be more green?
REP: Well, that's a good question. Typar is a very -- very much attuned to the sustainability desires of many builders and homeowners. (HOST: It helps our homes last longer.) Absolutely. Durability is a major important factor. (HOST: Right.) By keeping water out, you keep things from getting in there and destroying the structural integrity. (HOST: Right.) We help on indoor air quality (HOST: Okay.) by helping to prevent mold and mildew from growing in the wall cavity. And we also do training for builders to make sure that they put the housewrap up correctly, an important aspect.
HOST: Well, that's very important because when I drive around, I see a lot of housewrap flapping loose, and I look at their -- the tape around the windows, and I can see they've got the tape on backwards or upside-down or something where water or stuff can get in that building envelope. So you guys provide training so guys like me will know how to put it on correctly.
REP: Absolutely. We'll go to the jobsite. We'll go anywhere that the -- the builder, and we support our dealer network by providing training that allows them to understand what's the proper technique. And if they put it up with our Type R flashings and seaming tape (HOST: Right.), we actually offer a ten-year installed warranty.
HOST: Wow. Very nice.
REP: Yes, so it's important. So knowing how to do it right will provide you assurance for the life of your building.
HOST: Well, thank you for being here. Great new product.
REP: Thanks, Scott.
HOST: I'm sure it's been received warmly at the International Builders' Show.
REP: It's been the talk of the town.
HOST: Great.
REP: Thank you. [END]
