Seville Consulting, an Atlanta area-based firm owned by Carl Seville, was among 12 award recipients at the 2006 National Green Building Awards Gala on Sunday, March 12. The awards were presented during the National Association of Home Builders' 8th Annual National Green Building Conference in Albuquerque, N.M.
Seville Consulting, which has its offices in Decatur, received the award for Remodeled Home of the Year.
"As consumers show greater interest in homes that employ energy efficiency, resource conservation and sustainable building, these experts help expand green building from a niche market by giving prominence to housing affordability," NAHB Green Building Subcommittee chairman Ray Tonjes, a custom home builder in Austin, Texas, said. "What our winners bring to traditional construction is a better knowledge of green building science so that all home builders and home buyers can benefit."
"Carl's innovative project demonstrates that he is a leader in the green building movement. Another example of his leadership is the brand new green building for professionals course, part of the NAHB University of Housing's Certified Graduate Builder program, which debuted at the 2006 National Green Building Conference. Carl taught the initial class of 60 experienced builders in the pilot program," Tonjes added.
Seville's award was for a remodeling project at a house in a DeKalb County neighborhood in the Atlanta area. Last summer, the home received extensive renovations which converted it from a regular house into a healthier and more energy-efficient EarthCraft House.
It's what's inside that counts
Still, as reported in a recent article in Atlanta Home Improvement Magazine, going by this "house in the Druid Hills Historic District, you'd have a hard time pinpointing what makes it different from the other homes on the street. Built around 1918, the beautiful exterior of the home has a similar feel to some of the other historic houses in the area." The article noted that "in the case of this home, however, it's what's inside that counts."
Seville, an HGTVPro.com contributing editor, was one of the founders of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association's EarthCraft House Renovation Program in 2002. He is also the founder and former vice president of SawHorse Inc., one of the Atlanta area's largest and best known remodeling firms.
In the transformation of the historic home in Druid Hills, Seville enlisted the help of SawHorse, which had become extensively involved in EarthCraft renovations during his final years with the company. As a result, the home, which was featured during last summer's Southern Building Show in Atlanta, is now a prime example of an EarthCraft home with energy-efficient features from the ground up and where renewable products were utilized whenever possible.
Seville also presented a case study on the EarthCraft Remodeling Project on the award-winning Druid Hills home remodeling project during the NAHB National Green Building Conference in Albuquerque. On March 29, he will be a panelist for a discussion about green remodeling, entitled "Remodeling Futures," presented by the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University.
Seville has incorporated his knowledge and experience in EarthCraft Renovation into his new business venture, Seville Consulting. A major component of the firm's services is consulting services for businesses and individuals who want to make their homes "greener" but who need the assistance of someone with expertise about the design and specifications of green building. His clients include custom builders, production builders, architects, remodeling contractors, designers and homeowners.
