You know what it took me to realize that buying a rolling scaffold was a smart move? Right. About 10 years of working without one. Like everybody's probably done at one time or another, I did a lot of my ceiling work form a network of ladders bridged by 2x10 planks. I hung crown this way, painted and even installed suspended ceilings. It works, to be sure, but a rolling scaffold works much, much better, and Bil-Jax makes two sweet ones.
You may not use the scaffolds every day, but if your jobs are like mine, on the days that you do use them, they'll be worth their weight in coffee or employees who arrive on time. Bil-Jax's Pro-Jax Utility Scaffold is what some people in the trades call a Baker stage. It comes in 6-, 8-, or 10-foot lengths and is seriously pro-rated best for getting guys safely up to higher spots.
The company's Handy Scaffold, available in 3-, 4-, and 5-foot heights as well as 4- and 5-foot lengths, is a great fold-down unit also ideal for residential apps. What's cool about either unit is that you can use the laddered sides as a storage or drying rack for lumber. On larger trim jobs, I've loaded those sides with pre-stained trim to dry or just to keep the crew's footprints off them. The high-quality casters enable you to move the units around on site nicely, and moving ahead is the point.
