    SaniFlo Macerating Pump

Plumbing systems typically rely on gravity to evacuate brown and gray water from our homes. To that end, sewer and vent stacks usually run in a central (or central-ish) core through the building's frame. But what if you're converting a sewer-less garage space into an apartment? Or finishing a basement and the waste line is near grade? Or what if the ideal spot for adding a bath or laundry is nowhere near the waste stack?

One answer is the combination macerator/pump waste water systems from Saniflo. With units designed for different applications from bathroom to laundry, Saniflo can not only evacuate waste water up, it can send it sideways.

The Saniplus model, for example, can move waste water from a full bath up a 12-foot rise and/or 150 feet away from a soil stack. What's more, it can move the waste through 3/4-inch pipe, which means you don't have to chainsaw through the floor system or walls to run it.

Saniflo systems require no maintenance, according to the company. Although they're isolated from the house's main plumbing system via a check valve, they do require standard P-traps and venting. And you don't have to crack up the floor to install them.
