    Innotek Wireless Smoke Alarm

I was never a Boy Scout, but I'm a fan of their motto: Be Prepared.

In the case of preparing for the worst, it always makes sense to go the extra mile. Enter the new wireless smoke-alarm system from Innotek. If you live and build small, this might not make your eyes as wide as someone who builds 4000+ square foot homes or multifamily housing.

Here's the deal: A wireless smoke detector means that it can actually talk to the other smoke detectors in the house without any hardwiring. If there's an emergency, the smoke alarm that detects the smoke alerts the other alarms around the house — sort of an electronic bucket brigade, to use a fire-fighting metaphor.

While this may only save minutes or seconds in the time you have to evacuate, those small fractions of time can be valuable for making sure everyone is able to leave safely. Each smoke detector is battery-powered, so you still need to check on the batteries a few times each year. The units come with a 10-year limited warranty.
