It's always better to have it and not need it, right? That's why choosing a siding product that already has some insulation built inside is an idea worth looking into. It's also a nice way to differentiate your business from the other guys building in your area. And whether you agree with it or not Al Gore's Oscar-winning movie has made energy efficiency an appealing and trendy selling feature in every product category.
So consider adding Alcoa's new Structure EPS with an R-value of 4 to your repertoire. I know what you are thinking: An R-value of 4 is not enough to keep a house fully insulated. But before you click the BACK button, keep thinking about it If you're siding a house with 2x4 walls, you can increase the R-value from about 12 to 16. And if you're siding over an old, un-insulated house, you're increasing R-value by 100%.
The Structure EPS has expanded polystyrene inside a vinyl siding. One of the reasons you can get R-4 out of such a slim profile is that the siding forms a contiguous barrier i.e., no thermal breaks over the entire sidewall. This is good stuff.
If you choose the double 6" or single 7" profiles, there are more colors than I thought existed: 700. For the double 4" and 4-1/2" Dutch lap profiles, though, there are just 14 color choices.
