Energy Options, Part 1: Sun and Wind

Solar shingles. In the past, going solar meant installation of ping-pong-table-sized photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof that reeked of geekiness. Today, solar shingles offer the same alternative energy benefits, but sport a more-traditional rooftop look: a weather-proofing shingle, albeit with a high-tech twist.

Each shingle produces between 10 and 200 watts, enough to run a window fan. Hundreds of them together can power the whole house. Most systems are integrated with the local electricity grid, which provides juice after sundown and cloudy days.

Solar shingles, installed, range from $12,000 to $35,000. Federal tax breaks cover 30 percent of the cost, up to $2,000. Payback depends on the weather and electricity costs.
