2009 NKBA Kitchen Design Finalists

Large Kitchens Category -- 2nd Place -- Through the Porthole
An antique Russian submarine porthole was rusting in the client's garage, and he knew it had to go somewhere in his new house. And so it did, at the end of a salt water reef fish tank that can be viewed from the family room and kitchen. The reclaimed pine floors from a barn in West Virginia, the tongue and groove vertical painted boards for the walls, and mahogany tongue and groove panels on the ceiling coffers create a luminescent effect that surrounds.

A classic tin ceiling painted and glazed a pewter finish with a tin crown sitting atop the ceiling-height cabinets in olive green complete the glowing warmth this kitchen exudes. The bar seating area offers just the place for casual dining and fish gazing.
